Bridgeport to Old Saybrook
June 24, 2013
Bridgeport was a good stop and we considered staying another day. The view out the inlet into the Sound made us want to move on. We left at 0915 bound for, well, somewhere to be determined underway. The Sound water was dead flat and without any wind to propel us. We thought about anchoring behind Duck Island near Westbrook but actually made it to Old Saybrook.
Old Saybrook history began in the early 1600s when Englishmen established a fort at the mouth of the Connecticut River on a small peninsula. They met the locals who were friendly fishing types who showed them a thing or two. It was not long thereafter when the local Taliban type bullies, the Pequot’s came along burned some stores and took a few of the settlers out. This resulted in a state of war between the Europeans and the Pequats, which did not do the Ps any favors. The Connecticut River runs from Canada to the Sound about 400 miles. Over a thousand vessels were built on this river yet the bar at the entrance kept most ships to five feet or less in draft. Anything over that had to wait until the spring floods to exit the River.
The Saybrook Point Marina is a full, and I do mean full, service marina attached to a hotel. That means two pools, hot tub, sauna and free transportation to town. We have enjoyed our brief stay here but need to get back to anchoring out and to moorings. So, tomorrow we set sail (hopefully) for a short passage to Mystic.
