Old Saybrook to Fisher’s Island
June 25, 2013
After two days in a way too expensive marina that included about everything one could imagine, we decided to move on. The other two boats with whom we sailed from the Chesapeake are otherwise engaged in visiting family and friends in the area. The Brits we met aboard Ruffian will be in this harbor later today having sailed from Long Island.
We were underway less than 4 hours today and arrived in time for a nap tucked behind the island that the Duke of York gave to New York in 1664. Robert Fox purchased the entire island in 1863 for $55,000. That would cover about two square feet now. Today, the island is more or less a private community not open to mere transients very much. On the way here, we crossed the New London/Groton shipping lane that happens to be the way Subs based there get to home port. I hoped to see on but they chose to hide from us. Trucking along at about that same time, we hit a large log end on which did no damage but it did shake the boat as it wollered down the hull.
We decided to do as much easting as possible while the weather is good so we may not wait for the other boats. We still have no idea where we will spend the 4th.
