Last Night Aboard for a While
September 11, 2013
Any time a cruise crew leaves their boat, it is like driving away from a loved one at the airport. It leaves a little hole in the heart. It is also a generous dose of work. Why Knot has been our home for the past four months through some of the most awesome waters in America. She shows signs of the adventure such as the stains on her hull from the Chesapeake. Her toe rails are gray and she has a few new dings. Her sails have reached service life but are stowed and covered properly. We have sailed her hard at times and she has answered the call with tolerance of our abuse and that of the sea. We never once doubted her capabilities to tolerate ours. As she sits today, she is obviously not a dock queen that never leaves the area. We have a bit of a guilt complex leaving her without some serious maintenance though not warranted for the long sleep. We owe her a great deal and will shine her when we return. The decision to keep her in the water will test the bottom paint but that too will be renewed before we sail her again. Maybe she will let us slip away without complaint. Tonight is our last night aboard WK this year. We look forward to our return to Why Knot.
