Swimming! In Scotland!!!!! Yikes !
24 August 2021 | Loch Don
Katrina Wright | Sunny and warm
Once the fog had dissipated, we were off to kerrera, to a place we had walked but not anchored in castle bay, with, yes you guessed it, a castle on the hill. So it was off to explore the castle.
Built in 1582 and burnt down in 1647, it has miraculously survived and in 2006 extensive conservation of the castle was completed.
The window (oriel window) at the top of the tower (picture) is unique in that it is the only surviving architecture of the west highlands. It projects over the main entrance doorway, where the floor could be easily lifted to drop stones or boiling water on any unwanted callers! From the short time the castle was inhabited it appears this method wasn’t particularly effective.
It was so hot that on our return to the boat we decided to go for a swim, what a great decision, although a bit chilly initially, the water was so clear .... and free from jellyfish. Phil being Phil decided he needed to multitask - brushing the rudder clean and inspecting the rest of the boat, he is so good, I can just enjoy my swim and know the boat is in top tip condition.
It was then off to Loch Don, where the entrance to the loch is at times very shallow, winding and narrow, once in we were treated to the sight of seals and many, many birds, as not many people are brave/crazy/experienced enough to attempt this anchorage (thank you James for leading the way!), once again it was a very peaceful place.
We are still managing to sail in the afternoon, although the forecast is below 10kts the afternoon winds bring just enough for Phil to turn off the engine and unfurl the sails.
