The lunch menu
19 November 2012 | Pago Pago, American Samoa
Cloudy with some rain.
There was a listing in the new paper a few days ago about what the kids get fed at school. They listed both breakfast as well as lunch so I thought you might find it interesting what kids out here in American Samoa get. I have no idea what they get on the mainland but here goes:
Monday breakfast: Fried Rice w/diced sausage & scrambled eggs, Fresh ripe apple and 1% low fat milk
Tuesday breakfast: Chocolate chip muffin, turkey sausage patty, ripe banana,1% low fat milk
Wednesday breakfast: Hash browns, scrambled eggs, fresh papaya, 1% low fat milk
Thursday Breakfast: Fresh baked wheat twist roll w/icing, Ham roll up, ripe banana, 1% low fat milk
Friday Breakfast: Whole grain cereal, fresh baked wheat bun w/peanut butter, fresh oranges, 1% low fat milk.
For lunches:
Monday: B & W rice, chicken drumstick, corn, fresh oranges, 1% low fat milk
Tuesday: B & W Rice, beef stroganoff, cucumber stick, fresh kiwi, 1% low fat milk
Wednesday: Fresh patty on a fresh baked wheat bun, sautéed greens, fresh apple, 1% low fat milk
Thursday: B & W Rice, chicken curry, Taro/corn on a cob, ripe banana, 1% low fat milk
Friday: Turkey ham sandwich, Steamed pumpkin, chilled pineapple, 1% low fat milk.
Nothing fancy but it will keep the kids full as many of the families make so little, they relay on the schools to adequately feed their kids. I have no idea what the meals cost(if anything), nor how many kids take advantage of them, but they are at least provided to try and give the kids a decent diet. Diabetes is running rampant out here with the majority of the population affected. You hear health notices about diet and exercise all the time on the radio. While in the pharmacy the other day, the shelves were lined with needles and insulin for the locals. At least the government is making a effort to educate the kids on getting a proper diet though we see McDonalds and Carls Jr packed with them every day we are there and it's jammed on Saturdays.
There's a big tropical depression south of us causing quite a stir. All forecasters are saying to just stay put and wait it out(like ours told us last week). So here we sit waiting but we will be celebrating Thanksgiving with some of the other cruisers in the harbor.
