a long, short trip.

Bill
As I wrote in the last post, as we made our way north, it was in calm seas with just a breath of air and it really didn't do anything to help us along. We;'d put up the mainsail before we even left Refugio and then rolled out the genoa when there was any kind of wind. Then the wind would die and we'd roll in the genoa, turn off our Hydrovane wind driven auto pilot on the stern, start the engine and take off again. This went on over and over as we tried to get north. We'd hoped to get in some good sailing as most of the wind we'd had had been from the southwest and that would have moved us along nicely but as always, Mother Nature had other ideas. We'd planned on going into Bahia de Adair about 15 miles west of Penasco but we found it less than pleasing as the winds and swells had shifted to be coming from the southeast and that would have had them coming straight into the anchorage. Once we saw that, we turned eastward and started heading for Penasco. We started calling the different marinas and the yard where Zephyr is getting hauled out. We were about two weeks early and would need a space to keep Zephyr for some early prep. Here's where being a foreigner didn't help. Neither of us speak a bunch of Spanish so either the phones didn't get answered or the person who answered then didn't speak any English. In the end, I gave out our number and the man(Salvador) that owns the boat yard called us back and we had him make the calls to get us a slip here at the Safe Marina. What we didn't count on was that it's $35US A NIGHT!!! That's more than Paradise Village that also has five pools, free internet and free cable TV. This place doesn't have wifi, restrooms, showers or a laundry. You get a slip and power and water and that's it. It's a bare bones a place as possible. The harbor is packed with shrimp boats all in different states of repair as most wont leave the harbor for another month or so from what we have heard. We are looking into the local Fonatur Marina that's run by the government and is much cheaper and may move tomorrow. We will see how the night goes. Blue was sitting out in the cockpit a few minutes ago staring at a huge heron as it walked and squawked along the dock. She just stared at the big bird, making kitty chirping noises as it walked by the boat. It was lot bigger than she is. It flew off as I came up the companionway. As we neared Penasco, we both turned on our internet devices--Tracys phone and my IPad. Her's worked fine while the IPad downloaded about 235 emails and then stopped. There was suddenly no more internet. When we were in Bahia Kino tow weeks ago, I topped up my service with a 500 peso purchase that gave me 4 gigs of data. I got 300 megs before it shut off. Once we were tied up and had lunch, I hiked up to the big local Telcel store/customer service center to find out what was wrong. I even took Tracys phone along and its a good thing I did and while we had purchased another 500 pesos for her, it had never gotten activated. Her's worked but not under her plan. I had to cough up some more money before they would activate it. As for my data plan for the IPad, they claim two things.first, where we bought it OXXO doesn't sell data plans. Second, of the four gigs' I bought, it'd used them all plus the 500 pesos had never been activated under my "PLAN" and I was using them at a very expensive rate. I used the internet just as we were leaving Bhia Kino two weeks ago and haven't had internet till this morning. Their records show I've used it all but if I return tomorrow, they will print me a record of my usage. I'll be back tomorrow. We'll see what they say. I had to go to a supervisor to even get that done and the rep I was with just dismissed me as not knowing what I was talking about.

You put your trash out in trash cans by the curb. Here, they put it in raised steel containers to keep animals out of it while awaiting pickup.
OK, sounds like a restaurant I want to try. Nothing wrong with a skull on the sign.
