Hasta luego Symphony, muchas gracias, love Steven & Lisa xx

We have returned to Spain to meet the new owners of Symphony, Arek and Iwona, to run through all her systems.

We're back, overalls in hand!

As quick reminder, at the end of the season in 2019, we decided Symphony would be put on the market and we would start the process of buying/fitting out a blue water yacht to head off into the yonder. Well, what with Covid-19, the restrictive lockdowns over the last two years and life in general we have [...]

Our month at Sant Carles

Well, it is true to say, August in the Western Mediterranean becomes very, very busy and expensive. The Balearic Islands during this time are infiltrated with French & Italians all willing to pay vast amounts of euros to stay anywhere here. Even the mainland, north above Barcelona, leans to French Riviera [...]

Dia de Arroz

Dia de Arroz translates to "day of the rice" and is essentially Sant Carles De La Rapita's harvest festival.

What a feast & Steven becomes an apprentice

Not content with taking us out on their boat, Jordi and Rosa kindly invited us to their home to celebrate the Fiesta de Santa Rosa.

Cala de Mariposa

We had waited for a break in the weather to either head straight to Menorca or take the opportunity to see a little of the north coast of Mallorca first.

As the wind was forecast to be easterly for a couple of days we decided to head along the north coast to an anchorage described in our pilot guide as the most beautiful in the Balearics (Sa Calobra). It was also noted in our eyewitness guide so we thought it worth a try.

The North coast is completely different to any other part of Mallorca with dramatic cliffs tumbling straight into the sea making it steep to and enabling us to hug the coastline.

We motored due to impossibly light winds and on rounding the last headland prior to our anchorage saw a pair of peregrine falcons swooping and diving around the cliff before returning to their ledge to nest. What a welcome that was and the anchorage was no disappointment either.

With crystal clear water and high cliffs surrounding us, we anchored in 10 metres and went in for a swim.

Once we were out of the water Steven told me that whilst snorkeling he had seen a "juvenile barracuda" swimming by my feet.

All along the north coast we had seen butterflies and the Cala appeared to be full of them - hence the title for this entry which translates to cove of butterflies.

In the evening, we took the dinghy ashore and made the short walk through the cliff to the Torrent de Parais - a dry river bed at this point of the year but a torrent of water in late winter as the rainfall flows down the rivers from the mountains to the sea.

This was a fantastic anchorage and one not to be missed.
