The EVIL Chesapeake Chompers...
15 May 2011 | Crisfield, MD
We have officially left the South, having crossed into the Maryland waters of the Chesapeake. We enjoyed our visit to Cape Charles and spent our rest day doing remarkably little. But this morning the radar showed the shower and thunderstorm activity to be fairly far off so we headed off and managed to run all day without getting walloped.
The wind gradually died away as we came north and eventually we were just motoring along with only a knot or two of apparent wind. That was the cue for the entry of the Chesapeake Chompers: Nasty little flies that look like ordinary house flies but BITE! They tend to go for ankles and feet so you don't notice them until the pain part....It's nice being able to sail in shorts and a Hawaiian shirt, but I surely didn't miss the Chompers when were freezing our way south last fall.
