Sudest Island

Sue
A number of long boats (or banana boats) were organised for a trip up the Fieori River on Sudest Island. We piled into our designated boat and spent the next 45 minutes pounding back-jarringly into a rough seaway before heading towards mangroves and the river delta. I thought it might be an opportunity to see crocodiles, and our captain Terence indicated there were crocs in the river, but I think all our noisy high speed boats sent them into hiding. The river trip was quite beautiful, with dense rainforest on either side of the sluggish river, Tarzan vines hanging down, puffs of giant red hibiscus, little intriguing tributaries where the bush closed in overhead creating a sort of watery tunnel... We saw evidence of sago harvesting and there were a few locals plying the waters. It wasn't long before we arrived at a rocky area of the river where fresh water tumbled down between black rocks, creating cool shallow pools. Many of us enjoyed the refreshing water, some even washed their hair, watched keenly by a gaggle of locals from further upriver.

Our return trip, after a packed lunch, was a lovely wind-through-your-hair plane through smooth water. No back jarring this time, thank goodness! Jamie loved it, repeatedly asking our driver to go faster, even though we were going 'full noise' already.

That evening we had dinner on the big family cat, Glide, where all the girls 'frocked up', as it was Glide's final night before they planned to leave the rally and start heading home. Lots of great salads and fresh stuff on the barbeque, singing, paparazzi photos and laughs
