Soupy “Sails”
13 May 2021 | Savannah, GA
Thomas Leising | Cold, overcast, light rain then cool and clear skies
Up at 5:30 after a night of howling winds - 18 to 20 kts. Tom got up around 2:30 a.m. to check the anchor and all was secure. We pulled up the anchor at 6:30 a.m. and started our trek on a rising tide to Savannah. Temperature was 53 degrees, overcast, and foggy (great boating conditions) as we made our way up the intra coastal. Long pants, sweatshirts and rain jackets were the dress of the day. We kept our front window down (north wind to boot) as well as the sides.
As we entered Sapelo Sound it really got soupy and we could barely see KRP(Knot R Problem). This lasted for a few miles and then it cleared somewhat. Winds were from the north averaging 14-15 kts.
As the day progressed the skies cleared and by the time we reached Savannah it was a clear blue sky. Of course as it got sunny we picked up some more freeloading green heads - not anywhere near what we had the day before, but Cynthia was on top of her game and didn't take any prisoners -swatting and disposing overboard over 50 - small pleasures on a boat!
One great thing about the day was by leaving when we did we hit all the trouble spots on the section of the intra coastal before low tide, especially Hell Gate which is a notorious spot for grounding. When we went through it the depth was 9 ft.
We arrived at Savannah Bend Marina at 4:58 after traveling 57.41 nm. in 10 hrs. Tom emptied the remaining fuel into the tank and the we took them to the fuel dock. KRP fueled up as well and stayed there. The boat next to them is from Jupiter and guess what, have a place in Ocean City, NJ as well and are on their way up also. They had toured Savannah yesterday and are going to Hilton Head tomorrow.
This marina has a laundry with wash $1:00 and dryers $1.25. So after dinner I did two loads and will do another before we leave Saturday. Tom was going to go up with me when I put the clothes in the dryer, but when I was ready to leave his eyes were closed and sleeping. By the time I returned, a little after 10 p.m. he was horizontal on the couch and fast asleep. I put all the clothes away, woke him up and we went into bed.
As this marina is on the east side of the intra coastal, tomorrow we will Uber into Savannah for a day of sightseeing.
