Scotland

We had a delightful visit to Scotland's Isle of Harris with friends Mike & Jill. The weather swung back and forth between "atmospheric" to "lovely" and we managed to get in quite a a bit of bog trotting and beach walks, not to mention a visit to the Harris tweed shop and the local distillery. The scenery was so dramatic - we were taking 100 photographs a day - making it difficult to decide which photo to use as the header for this blog. Hawaii 5-0 !

Yes, we really did stop for a day in Hawaii enroute to Scotland! One of the best Ukelele stores in the world is at the north end of Oahu, so we rented a car for the day and enjoyed a scenic drive to the north end of the island. We met Cory of "Hawaii Music Supply" aka "the Ukelele Site" who guided [...]

We spent traveled to Whanganui for Easter. Much chocolate was consumed in the evenings, and good times were had on the black sand beaches with Hadley and family. Rick, thanks for getting the hot tub heated up, that was a real treat! Boz - thanks for being such a great host , cooking and arranging for [...]

Whangarei Gardens

We were pleased to have Marty & Gabby join us for a week aboard TabbyCat. Since we're currently based in Whangarei, we decided to show them the lovely gardens in the old rock quarry. There are some truly amazing and exotic plants to be seen! We spent the better part of the afternoon there, and didn't [...]

On the road again....

Since we last wrote, we've had some high adventures, but tonight's missive comes from the not so exotic location of LAX airport. We're halfway through our journey from Whangarei New Zealand to Bocas Panama. Two flights down, two to go.

Tonga!

After many months of hard work on boat projects, we finally left New Zealand. Stopping on the way to Tonga at South Minerva Reef, we were able to enjoy the Atoll all to ourselves,

Majuro, Marshall Islands

S&C
Greetings from Majuro!
While we never officially logged our arrival, we've now been here over two months! I guess that means we've been busy!?
We were happy to meet up with old friends Rob of Changing Spots, and Rix & James of Pogeyan. Vicky (Inspiration at Sea) followed us up from Funafuti with her new crew Gary, arriving about a month after us.
There are quite a few other boats here hiding out from the Southern cyclone season, and there's a very active cruising community witha morning VHF "net" and other activities. We have entered TabbyCat in a couple of round the buoy races, and represented Maine cat very well in both. Weekly dinners out with the other cruisers, music nights on Pogeyan, Christmas Caroling, and diving on WWII wrecks are some of the things that have been occupying our time. As always, we've also been busy on boat projects. More so than usual in fact, since the shipping of parts from the US to the Marshall Islands is easy via the USPS. This is a hold over from the days when the US Army occupied the islands during the war. While we are never in favor of war, we do appreciate the low cost shipping! We've installed new nets between TabbyCat's bows, since our old ones were threatening to dump an unwary person into the drink. The new ones are much springier with a more open weave, which we hope will provide less resistance to wave action in rough seas. (although we hope to avoid rough seas!)
They are also supposed to be a lot stronger, and therefore longer lasting. Time will be the test on that one! Colin manufactured a beautiful furniture-grade holder for our spare lines - so pretty it was a shame to install it in the anchor locker. He also replaced most of our rusting metal bathroom fixtures (towel/tp holders etc. ) with homemade wooden versions. We have also finally replaced the three upper batslides ( the connection at the luff end of the batten pocket that holds the main sail to the mast ). Two of these failed during our outward trip from NZ to the Australs back in May, and have been jury rigged with spectra lashing ever since. Already we have noticed that the main comes down a lot quicker! While we were at our sail work we also patched tears on the batten pockets where they have contacted the side stays, and replaced torn tell tales. We've ordered cork flooring for the upstairs area, and have designed (and ordered from Maine Cat) a spare seat/storage box for in front of the helm station, and coverings for the outside areas where lines enter the cockpit. Our VHF radio finally bit the dust, so we've installed a used one purchased from another cruiser (thanks Pete/French Kiss) and ordered a new one which will also include AIS ( notification of commercial shipping ). One other interesting thing that is in transit to us are two rowing set ups for our paddleboards, complete with 8' carbon fiber oars. To make room for these we sold both of our inflatable kayaks. In additional to all the boat work and parts ordering, we've been working on our bodies, alternating between yoga/stretching on one day and calisthenics the other days, with one day off for good behavior. We're planning a trip to the USA in March and England in April, so are looking forward to seeing family and friends soon!
