1 August 2019 Introspection at Sea - Gypsy Life
Swell is down to 2 meters and only from one direction now so we are both settling in well our third day out. A couple fire drills the first two days with water and bilge pumps after we took on a side wave that swamped the main cabin thru a gap open in the butterfly hatch. I was sitting in John's fav spot on the settee to be close to the head or exit while feeling sick and eating a cracker when the wave dumped on my lap. John wanted to laugh but held off. Cushions and my ego are all rinsed of salt water and dried off now.
The long day watches are mesmerizing and we both find ourselves doing a lot of reflection as we watch the rhythm of the constant water movement. Like our lives, seemingly without purpose or direction at times; so many decisions good and bad have brought us to this amazing space in time. When we have our watch overlap times we end up talking about how we got to be here. John still pops up with a name from his past saying I hope he/she knows I finally made it out sailing. I imagine many of you had your doubts as well.
Sea Gypsy life has its unknowns for sure. Winds are not looking favorable for us to make Aitutaki prior to the weekend for check into Cook Islands. If we bypass it and go to Palmerston, we lose an opportunity to shuttle supplies to the three families at Palmerston who only get a supply ship every three months. Have a couple hours to make that decision as winds were to change at some point today.
Fourth day out and slow going as very light wind. Got to run the kite all day until squalls threatened this evening. Aitutaki is still 60 miles out and we are passing some small islands tonight giving a wide berth. Heard from the Poly Magellan net today that the anchorage is not very comfortable so may opt to keep going as Sunday Sabbath is strictly kept here and even swimming, fishing or sailing not allowed. Could be interesting.
