Our Favorite Anchorage in Maine (and my birthday!)
22 July 2007 | Round Island, Maine

We left for Rockland on Friday in a heavy fog, which quickly became really heavy fog as we struggled to dodge lobster pot buoys we could barely see emerging from fifteen feet before the bow. After sailing back through Fox Island Thoroughfare, we navigated slowly through the unseen rocks and islands of Merchant Row with the help of GPS, radar, depth soundings, and lots of eyes on deck! We headed toward our favorite anchorage in Maine, sailing between Round and McGlathery Islands and then through the narrow channel between Round and Wreck Islands, still surrounded by fog. The channel is less than ¼ mile wide, and yet we still could barely make out the islands on either side, so it was definitely a foggy day! The fog finally lifted as we began dinner, reminding us what a beautiful spot this is. We spent the next day there, celebrating my (Kim’s) fifteenth birthday (the fourth birthday I have celebrated in Maine or Nova Scotia) by exploring the island, enjoying a great birthday dinner aboard, and of course, presents!
