Back to the Beginning

We left Round Island on Monday and had an easy trip to the harbor and village of Southwest Harbor on Mt. Desert Island. Tahu Le’a was built in Southwest Harbor in 1998-1999, and launched there in the Spring of 1999. The prominent red building in the photo is part of the original Morris Yachts yard, and Tahu Le'a's hull was laid up in that building. We spent our first summer in Maine shortly thereafter – all the way back when I was seven and Kaela was three (my first birthday in Maine)! Southwest Harbor was our “home port” for that summer, and has continued to feel that way ever since. It’s really our original home away from home on the East Coast. Of course, one of the main reasons that Southwest Harbor has remained not only a home but a favorite port is the bakery whose kitchens are walking distance from the marina – the Little Notch! The Little Notch is one of our favorite bakeries in all of the U.S., and their sticky buns are especially delicious when purchased straight out of the oven. Even better for cruising sailors, their baking facilities are in the back of the building with the local West Marine store! Great pizza at their small restaurant in town as well! We also like how the town is still undeniably a working town (fishing, lobstering, boatbuilding…) as well as a spot which welcomes yachts and tourists. Southwest Harbor really feels like home when we are welcomed back by not only the management of the local marina but also the owners/hostesses of a couple of our favorite restaurants, including Fiddler’s Green and XYZ. We went to Fiddler’s Green to have a belated birthday dinner out for me (Kim) and enjoyed telling our friends at the restaurant all about our travels.
