We went fishing with Al in his 16' panga and as we were trolling I noticed some disturbance in the water. We went to investigate thinking it may be a school of fish and it was a whopper! It was a whale shark and it was longer than the boat. It was probably 20+ feet long but very gentle and docile. It swims with its mouth open on the surface and skims in whatever is there. Later when we came back to the same spot, there were dive boats around the whale sharks and people were jumping in the water to swim with them.
Here's the interesting part! Last night we went to the Teatro de Ciudad to see a documentary that a friend Penny has made here in La Paz had produced. It was about the taking of land from the people and giving it to developers and speculators who wall off beach access and create exclusivity rather than inclusivity. Damn developers! It was well done and well received but it was entirely in Spanish so we just got the jest of it. However prior to the film they were showing a film which included whale sharks. I had never seen them before and don't think I even knew that they existed. Needless to say that when we came upon them in the wild I was an expert!
After we saw the sharks we headed up to Balandra and cruised along the coastline north of La Paz. It was stunning. That bungee cord is getting tighter and stronger and I have my panga all set up in my mind. I may never come back!
Penny's Two Cent's: Our dear friend Al (Cox) accompanied Fred and I down to Cabo and then returned to San Diego (with Jim Bell and Fletcher Pond) to return to his sweet heart Janet. Upon arrival here in La Paz we quickly became friends with another wonderful friend, Al (Marchand) who is here with his sweetheart Janet! Al and Janet, Al and Janet - Life is good.
The way people keep track of time here in La Paz is rather simple and here is their method: If the newspaper is slim and the comic's are in black & white it must be "Saturday" (which is any day but Sunday) - if the paper is thicker and the comic's are in color then it must be Sunday.
Signing off with love to every one of you! PS: Fred has ideas of buying a Christmas tree to put on the boat!!
