Cockfight!

Penny and I went into town to check on the cockfight as we were told that it was out of town 1KM and was to start at 3. As we checked around we found out that the fight was in town and started at 4. So we headed back and Joe and Marylou were just arriving so we saved them the beach landing. Penny decided that she wasn't interested in the cockfight but Joe, Marylou and I decided to go. So we headed in about 4:15 and found the spot under the Tecate tent. It was pretty obvious with all the pickup trucks parked and a bunch of guys standing around. As we got there Joe, who speaks good Spanish, found out that there were 20 roosters for 10 matches and would start at 5. Well we stood around but they were putting the roosters in the cages and soon two were taken out and held by their handlers. Then the pesos started to be passed back and forth and the betting had begun. Not sure what the odds were or how the winnings were distributed and we elected not to participate. Never bet on something that you have no clue about. Finally about 5:30 the roosters were taken to the Tecate tent and their handlers went into elaborate preparations attaching a wicked looking knife like spur to one leg. It took about 20 minutes to carefully attach the spur and then it was time. The handlers faced off holding the roosters and thrusting them at each other while pulling feathers out and generally getting the roosters pissed off at each other. Then they were dropped on the ground and all hell broke loose. They were on top of each other and pecking the back of the neck and it happened so fast that it was hard to see what was happening. One was down and they pulled the other off and the handler tried to revive his rooster and got him up and going again. There was someone counting so I guess it was like a boxing match. The fight continued but the one rooster just didn't have enough left and finally succumbed and the fight was over in about 2 minutes. There was not blood but the dead rooster had a big wound on the back of his neck. We didn't stay as we had a dinner date aboard Mystic at 6 so we hustled back to the boat. I think we all thought that this was our first and last cockfight.
