A Fine Day for Fishing

09 December 2012 | Outside La Paz
Fred/beautiful smooth warm day
My friend Al invited me to go fishing with him today. He is an avid fisherman and has a small panga and we met at 6:30 AM. Off we went and we trolled with 3 rods for awhile and after about 2 hours we (Al) caught a good size Cabrilla. We decided to try our luck along the coast in the Cerralvo Channel. I was anxious to see that area as I can see it from out boat on the way up to La Paz and it looks interesting. We trolled and caught one Sierra which makes really good Ceviche. I had heard about an old resort called Las Cruces for three rock crosses erected on the rocks by some fisherman some time ago. The resort is a fly in resort and dates back to 1948 and Bing Crosby and Desi Arnaz were some of the partners. It has 10,000 acres of land and 5 miles of coastline. A magnificent setting. It looks well kept and was open for business and is very exclusive I’m told.
We turned around as we were quite far from La Paz in a small 16 foot panga and headed back to the buoys that mark the San Lorenzo Channel which you have to go through to get to La Paz as it is very shallow outside the channel. We trolled and all of a sudden we got a strike and in came another Sierra. And then another and another. We had a tangle with the 3 lines in the water so we stopped to untangle the mess and as Al was pulling in a line by hand he caught another Sierra! That is a fish story that he will undoubtedly tell for a long time.
The final tally was one Cabrilla and 7 Sierra so it looks good for Ceviche at coffee on Tuesday and Al makes the best. We pulled into a cove and dropped the anchor to clean our fish. Three pelicans came up to the boat and Al claims that they know him as this is where he cleans all his fish. As he started we were joined by more and had a crowd of 14 hungry pelicans waiting for Uncle Al to feed them. He cuts the filet of each side and then cuts out the innards and feeds them to the pelicans. Then he cuts the remaining skeleton in half and throws them out and there is a mass pounce for the spoils. They will get a whole half of the fish, either with the head or the tail and swallow it. Sometimes the tail sticks out a little but they do get it all down.
Arrived at the dock at 4:30 and commenced clean up. Penny had gone to an art fair in Los Barriles and she got back to the boat about the same time as I did. It was a great day and I can’t wait for Tuesday for Ceviche and Tuesday night to grill some filets.

Tapatai's Photos - Main
We left San Diego on January 16, heading South al gusto - with a sketchy plan written in sand at low tide (that is a quote from my buddy Ellen Gallant!) Mexico lends itself to beautiful photos which we will try to honor.
