Train ride to the Copper Canyon and Creel

22 January 2016
Fred/cold but warming

We arranged for a taxi to pick us up at 0730 and take us to the train station in El Fuerte. Boarded the train at 0815 and found out that the only class that day was Primera. No Economia. The price was $1254 per person for first class v. $744. The difference is there is carpet on the floor in first and not in economy. We will take economy back to experience the difference.

We got good seats on the right side so you can get scared xxxtless as you go over a very high bridge or the tracks are carved into the side of the mountain. You look straight down and wonder how many people died building the tracks back in the late 50's and early 60's. We went to the dining car and had coffee for $30p and pan tostado (3 pieces) for $35p.

Nice ride with super nice conductor and beautiful scenery. We did this ride 20 years ago and it was on the old cars where the windows opened and no carpet. At some of the stops kids would get on selling burritos, empanadas and Cocas. But no more as the train company will not allow any food on the train that was not purchased on the train.

It is a 71/2 hour ride and arrive in Creel at 1545. We stayed at Plaza Margaritas which is the same hotel we stayed at 20 years ago. The rate is $700p which include breakfast and dinner! At the current exchange rate of 18:1 its $39.00! Dinner was a very good soup and hash with mashed potatoes and coffee. Tasted like corned beef hash but was tasty. Breakfast was 2 pancakes, scrambled eggs with ham, orange juice and coffee also very good. Today we are exploring Creel. The elevation is about 8500' so the air is thin. Last week they had snow but today it is bright sunshine and clear skies. 35 degrees this mornings arming into the 50's in the afternoon.

Tomorrow we ride the train back to El Fuerte and the next morning head south to Mazatlan and a nice warm beach camp.

Tapatai's Photos - Main
We left San Diego on January 16, heading South al gusto - with a sketchy plan written in sand at low tide (that is a quote from my buddy Ellen Gallant!) Mexico lends itself to beautiful photos which we will try to honor.
