We're off to New Caledonia
01 August 2011 | Opua, New Zealand
Jim Thomsen
Having given up on ever getting to Tonga this winter, we told Commander's our destination was flexible. The route to New Caledonia looks good this week so yesterday we left Opua. All is good but we've had a little excitement. On my watch last night (Katie) a loud noise roared through the main cabin and all the instruments started flashing in the cockpit. Of course Jim was sound asleep. What the heck??? Turns out the bow thruster shorted out so the noise part was easily fixed but now we won't have it for arrival. We don't use it much anyway but is a nice back-up. The prop is making increasingly loud and worrisome noises. We only had to motor a bit of yesterday and now the wind looks like it will shoot us up there without needing it until we are approach the reef. Fingers crossed it hold together long enough to get into Noumea safely. We will still need to run it to charge batteries since the generator starts but quickly shuts off with an error code with no simple fix. That was day one. But we have nice wind, sunny skies and moderate seas so that part is terrific. It is so nice to be sailing again! We are both feeling fine and well rested, enjoying the ride.
