I'm a bit late on the data this year. I like to keep track of our annual mileage and energy usage. This helps keep our lifestyle in perspective. The travel data is based on our plotter. We usually turn on the plotter about an hour before we leave so if we are swinging on the anchor that is considered "moving time". Keep in mind though that moving time includes when we are pulling the anchor or when we are hove to, For 2010 we traveled a total of 3760 nautical miles over a total of approximately 880 hours (36.6 days). Our average moving speed was 4.3 knots. Our top speed recorded was 28.1 knots. I remember when this happened. We were in some big seas on our way to Fiji. The plotter recorded us sliding down a big swell. Looking back through the log it looks like our best 24 hour stretch that was noted was 138 miles on our way to Tarawa. Energy consumption was moderate this year. we purchased 380 liters (about 100 gallons) of diesel fuel for 2010. Remember 230 liters (60 gals) of fuel was contaminated and had to be removed in Suva, so we actually used 150 liters (40 gall). Oh and we can't forget that we haven't yet taken on fuel in Majuro, We filled our tanks when we arrived from our jerry cans so add an additional 60 liters So not including the fouled fuel, we burned 210 liters (55 gal) in 2010. We also used 10 gallons of gasoline for the outboard and generator. We used shore- power in New Zealand for periodically from January-April mostly to run a few tools while we were working on boat projects. The vast majority of our electrical use comes from our wind generator and solar panels. So, that's our traveling and energy consumption. This sure is a change from our shoreside life in Alaska. If people want to get serious about lowering fuel consumption, they could certainly take some cues from cruisers.
