Day 2
07 July 2012 | Off Oregon Coast
Mark
With some very light winds most of the day yesterday, we were all relieved (while finishing spaghetti dinner in the cockpit) to have the wind build to 7, then 10 and 12 knots from the NW. After a bit, we hoisted the A-Sail and finally put some miles beneath us. But the 0200 to 0400 watch saw the wind build to 18 and we stuck with our plan, dousing the "aso" for the genny. Today has seen the wind build and fill in more from behind. With 3 high pressure systems now penning us in against the coast, we dare not turn out, or get becalmed. So it's been a fast sleigh ride south this evening with the wind and waves behind us. We're making good boat speed now at over 9 knots and the water has turned a most amazing blue. Our watch schedule has been interesting with basically 4 hours on and 6 off. Each 4 hour shift is overlapped by the last 2 hours of the previous watch and the first 2 hours of the next watch so we have a fresh set of eyes every 2 hours. The crew is settling in and it's been pretty warm. We've already been slathering on the sun block and have some color on our faces. But I can already tell there's some sleep issues. Our sponsored welcoming committee asked if there were any special requests we might have upon arriving in Maui..... the one thing I can think of right now is maybe hotel rooms :
