09 July 2012 | San Francisco
Noon to noon run for day 4 was 172 miles. We are between Cape Mendocino and San Francisco about 100 miles offshore. You know you are in warmer climes when it's 68 degrees inside the boat and we have not run any heaters. We've got more wind now (26-30 NW) and the boat is screaming along on broad reach consistently over 8.5 with reefed main and some rolled out genoa. Benjamin says he's having a ball and it's hard to get the wheel from him at times. :) It's about 8:40PST and will be dark soon so we're considering a second reef so we don't have a fire drill in the blackness if it blows up to 30 knots sustained. Sure am glad we are going with this and not against it! I have the 00:00-04:00 tonight so will be sailing by the binnacle compass. It's more than a bit weird and you get vertigo if all you can see is the instruments dancing around in front of you with no horizon and it takes some getting used to. We have roll call in about an hour and will see now what the other boats have chosen to do given the weather GRIBS. Sure would be nice to see that yacht tracker display aboard our boat, but we don't have internet here. We're lucky to have simple text e-mail. Lolo made black beans and rice for dinner and we had my favorite lunch today of tuna melts on a bagel. So we're eating well. The sun even popped through briefly which was nice to see after days of grey.
