bicycle tour

27 August 2012
Fanning has an interesting monetary system. It does not seem to matter what currency you pay in (Australian, NZ, or US dollars) the exchange is 1:1 and you will receive change in Australian dollars. However, there is also a loose barter system as well. Today we "paid" ½ bag of dried cherries, ½ bag of dried cranberries, two brownie mix packs and a partial bag of lunch meat for 5 gallons of gasoline - thereby replenishing our dinghy fuel. We were both happy with the trade and as a bonus, were able to borrow their two bikes for a ride down the south motu to see some of the farther villages. It was nice to see the lay of the land away from the main village - and see that people were working harvesting copra, harvesting farmed seaweed (purchased by China for use in cosmetics) and also women collecting, and weaving coconut palm fronds for use as mats, roof panels and baskets. We were greeted by many children in both the customary word for hello, "maorey" - and also "hi" as some seemed to want to practice their English. Toward the last village on our route, we were followed by a particularly rambunctious and cute group of 4-5 year old boys who were racing us on foot, laughing and jumping. When I tried to take their picture, they'd ham it up and pose. There was a "store" at our turnaround, which was a small hut with a window. I wanted to buy something more out of wanting to help support the local economy than anything else, so opted for a can of Fanta. Price was $2.30......for a can. We received our Australian change and went on our way. As we rode past small grass huts - perched on white sand, backlit by the glowing azure lagoon and flanked on either side by plentiful green coconut palms, I could not help but think "these kids have no idea just how good they have it and I wonder if they ever will." I was a little somber on the way back as I keep wishing Piper was here and thinking about how she would enjoy and interact with the smiling brown-skinned kids (many of them naked.) I'm definitely missing her, but hoping to get her to Tonga with us. OH - and yesterday we motored the dinghy amongst a pod of about 400 dolphins. IT was incredible. I took some great video just by putting the GoPro in the water. Will try to post next time we have internet. Tomorrow is my birthday. Well - tomorrow in Fanning......but they are a day ahead. So - I think that mean I get 2 birthdays! Never thought I'd celebrate a birthday on Fanning Atoll.
