Andrew Rosen | partly cloudy with good winds
T minus one day and counting. Yesterday brought another unique evening. To date, we have yet to land a fish while trolling, although we did have a few brief strikes along our journey. Nevertheless, Davy prepared an amazing sushi spread for dinner with tuna (both raw and seared), dorado, salmon, and sea bass (from our freezer), along with a huge bowl of sushi rice and packages of rolling papers to make either sashimi, nigiri or rolls. There were bowls of water to wet your hands to pack the rice and bamboo/string mats. It came with all the “fixings”: soy sauce, wasabi, toasted sesame seeds, avocado, and ginger. Who could have guessed that in the middle of dinner, we had a fish strike on one of the lures we constantly trail off Nomad while under way? Dinner was suspended as all hands helped to land what ended up to be a 10Kg (22lb) Skipjack Tuna. They are not the best tasting fish (Yellow Fin is far preferred), but having gaffed the fish to land it, It was decided to filet and freeze it for future sushi. [Would believe that while I am writing this blog, we had another strike, but it got away?] We resumed dinner and had our fill before calling it a night.
The winds and seas have shifted more to our stern, which has reduced the amount of rolling a bit. It is still something that none of us enjoys. Winds have also increased a bit, so we may be trying to fly the gennaker again. We will see how the day continues to develop. You should expect the next blog as we are approaching the harbor on Nuku Hiva.
