We have begun our next cruising adventure with plans to spend the next three months revisiting Canada, reaching as far north as the Central Coast of British Columbia north of Vancouver Island. We could reach as far north as Prince Rupert, the final jumping off port for Southeast Alaska, but that requires more time than we have allotted for this season's cruising. Our initial starting date has been delayed by the installation of our new dodger/bimini (check out the above photo) and the wet/cool weather we have been experiencing due to an extended La Nina (cooler than normal ocean temperatures). The weather pattern has not officially broken with more rain and cool weather in the forecast, but we found a small window of opportunity to at least get to Salt Spring Island. We left Bainbridge yesterday morning under blue skies and minimal winds, so it was a day of motoring over flat seas. We at times reached speeds of almost 9 knots over ground (6.5 knots through the water), reaching our first destination, Port Townsend at the entrance to the Strait of Juan DeFuca in only 5 hours, a trip which normally takes us 6+ hours. We found our favorite anchorage just off the city dock where there were only 2 other boats (normally joining half a dozen boats), so there was almost unlimited access to anchoring spots. It can probably be attributed to the fact that it was a Monday, and the weather still is not ideal for cruising. After setting the anchor, we launched our dinghy, mounted the outboard engine and settled in for a calm afternoon under clear skies and cool temperatures. We went ashore in the late afternoon and took a stroll through the historic district, checking out the boats in the marina, before making a stop at Sirens restaurant for a pre-dinner cocktail hour on their balcony overlooking Lion's Paw as we awaited the time for our reservation at the Fountain Café, our favorite restaurant here in PT. Once again, dinner was great. We returned to Lion's Paw before dark and settled in for a calm night's rest. We head for Canada later this morning.
