A Dodgy Day

The day quickly began with a little bit of excitement as we negotiated the Fernandina Shallows. The chart was not as accurate as we had hoped, and perhaps I had been holding it upside down, but we definitely did a little bump and run as they called it down here. That was the first of about 20 alerts we had to negotiate to get down to Palm Cove Marina at Jacksonville Beach. It was a bit like playing a computer game, watching the charts on the phone, following the directions carefully, and avoiding the shallows and shoals. The excitement continued right up until the marina, as the channel was hard to negotiate even at close to high tide. We have done the laundry, cooked dinner and are about to collapse into bed before 8 PM. Just as well we’re exhausted, because we have an early start in the morning. We have to be out of here around 6:30 AM if we want to take advantage of the highest tide. We will be heading out of here as soon as it is light, and hopefully tomorrow will be a more straightforward day as we try to reach Saint Augustine.
