The Everglades

We always say that compared to England, everything is bigger in America. I am learning that compared to South Carolina, everything is bigger in Florida. The roads, cities, high rises and stores are all bigger. Yesterday I learned that nature is bigger too. We love overlooking the marsh at Hilton Head with its beautiful feathery grasses and winding rivulets that lead to the ICW. We also enjoy kayaking quietly through nature observing the birds when we can. The Everglades stretch as far as the eye can see - interrupted only in one direction as high rises rudely interrupt the horizon. The way to see the landscape is by airboat- large, noisy contraptions that hover on the surface of the water and hurtle through the rivers at speed. This was FUN! It was exhilarating without feeling that one was about to be thrown over the side into the mouth of a hidden alligator( although it did cross my mind). We went in the middle of the day and it was too hot to see a lot of gators, but we did see three. We saw more iguanas - huge, thick skinned lizard perched on grasses that somehow did not break under their weight. The biggest one we saw, the guide told us, weighed 12 pounds. Yes Timmy- that is as much as you! Although you should be 10 pounds really. After the Everglades, we took the dogs to Boca Beach. We were in the dog section which was definitely more a meet and greet for dogs than anything else. Timmy loved it and only put a couple of big dogs in their place. Got to go now - breakfast and spa this morning!
