The Rose--Bligh Water

21 September 2014 | Bligh water, Fiji
Patricia Gans
Bula! It has been a spirited journey already this morning. We left Yadua at 0530 to catch the calmest part of the day for crossing Bligh water en route to Yasawa. We arrived at Yadua yesterday evening after a glorious sail from Viani Bay. The island is beautiful and the beaches begged us to explore but we were unsure of our welcome since we recalled from last year something about the green crested iguauna sanctuary on the tiny southeast island of the group making the island off limits. We were welcomed by a lovely sea turtle and fiery sunset while the frigates hassled a collection of boobies trying to find dinner along the shore. The breezes were lovely and cool keeping all the mosquitoes away and making for great sleeping. We thought someone might come from the village and perhaps they would have ventured out for a visit had we not arrived so late and left again so early this morning. We had our yagona ready with a boat card and gifts for the school but no friendly faces arrived so we were left to a quiet evening. The island looks very dry with the lack of rain and we wondered how the villagers are doing and what they are doing for water. Leaving this morning the wind was already blowing strong and the swells were mounded up tall and steep by the counter current over the shallows to the west of the island. But the wind was going our way and we watched the rising sun stream forth from behind heavy boiling grey rain clouds as we raced along at over 8 knots toward open water enjoying the light sprinkle which rinsed the salt from the decks and windows. We wished we could have spent a week at Yadua such is its lovely peacefulness but the weather calls for more wind building over the next week so we are heading west while the crossing is good. Until next week, Pat and John s/v The Rose in the midst of Bligh water and loving it ;-)

The first stop in our "Puddlejump" was the beautiful volcanic islands of the Revillagegidos group off the coast of Mexico. They are a seldom visited treasure.
