Wipe Out + Conservatism as Latent Hostility

Conservatism as Latent Hostility

Conservatives, these days are not just disagreeable, they typically disagree with liberals by 180 degrees. If liberals argue X, conservatives argue -X. Examples here abound. Cutting the deficit will injury economic growth. Cutting the deficit will grow the economy. Religion and government should remain separated. Religion in government is needed. The social safety net is necessary. Expenditures on social programs should be axed. Taxes should be raised, especially on the rich. Taxes should be cut, especially on the rich. Birth control should be made freely available. Birth control should not be made freely available. Abortions in the first trimester are fine. Abortions in the first trimester are an abomination. And so it goes, ad nausium.

It is one thing to disagree, but to disagree by polar opposites strongly indicates something else is going on -- not involving much considered thought. What are the odds of good thinking producing 180 degree polar opposites most of the time? Variations and deflections perhaps, but not polar opposites. So what accounts for what we observe? Resentment, I submit. Pure and simple resentment.

Resentment regarding conservatives maligned intelligence by liberals. Resentment regarding conservatives' religion in the eyes of liberals. Resentment regarding conservatives' typically lesser educations in the eyes of liberals. Resentment over the claim of liberals that conservatives have been victimized by the propaganda of Koch & friends. Resentment of research showing conservatives have enlarged amygdalas making them more fearful and threatened, more inclined to network and more inclined to have less empathy. Resentment regarding the same research showing that liberals have better developed anterior cingulate cortexes making them better able to deal with complex facts, resolve problems and have more empathy. Resentment that liberals look down more on Red conservative states more than on blue liberal ones. Resentment that liberals think they know it all and that conservatives know little of value. And resentment of liberals' arrogance in these circumstances.

I could expand this list but I think the reader could as well. The result is conservatives behave toward liberals like they resent them, just like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell resents the fact that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had an affair with his now former wife.

About:
Kimball Corson: I am a 75 year old solo sailor, by choice. However, I did take on a personable, but high maintenance female kitten, now a full grown cat, named KiKiPoo when she is sweet, or KatKatPo after she has just killed something like a bird or bat. [...]
Extra:
Although I was a lawyer and practiced law with good success for thirty years, creating significant new law, I never really believed in the law, the politics of law or in the over reaching self-interest of most lawyers I met. Too much exposure to Nietzsche and other good and seriously thoughtful [...]
