"Dumbing Down" and Free College for All Qualified Are Different

10 March 2016 | Pago Pago, American Samoa

The two issues are separable. Free college and dumbing down. Much of the latter problem has to do with the rise of teachers colleges, I think. I once saw the spread of SAT scores for college grads by subject major. Math, English, Physics were at the top with high 700's in M and V. And with almost 100 majors in between, general education and elementary education were at the very bottom respectively with scores in the high and mid 300's in V and M, also respectively.

After years of warnings, the School of Education, that John Dewey founded at the Univ. of Chicago, was recently closed down because the Univ. concluded the work being done there continued to be academically sub standard. This is rare. We have had a flood of academically incompetent teachers coming from our nation's teacher's colleges to fill our schools. And now they pour out of on line and for profit universities, too.

Phi Beta Kappa refuses to recognize teacher college graduates. I tied for Summa Cum Laude at one of Michigan's big three public universities as an undergrad with an education school major who had taken six and a half years to graduate (I did it in two flat with a double major, math and econ) and she had actually taken two courses on carving soap with children and had gotten A's and four quarter hours of credit for each,

Teachers set the tone, pace and quality standards. Private schools do better and it is because they have better teachers who are often paid less but like the better students such schools tend to have who want to learn. Good students can come from anywhere, but their densities matter and more are found at better schools.

As one person just said of my own good education, "What do you have kimball? A few pieces of fine paper given to you from an organization or group with your name in calligraphy on it? It looks fine and good in the world of elites but in the world of the 99% it won't even get you bowl of soup. I'm going to guess you lack any real world experience on how the real world works." My response that I had practiced law at a high level all over the United States and probably knew better how the real world works than he did, clearly fell on deaf ears.

In this day and age, where expertise and education is viewed as a joke by the "know nothings" and ignoramuses of the world who are quite noisy about it, and one man's opinion is widely deemed as good as any other's, what should we expect?

Ignorance ascends and shouts down its opposition to dominate. No one can arbitrate in this situation. They get shouted down too and there is no agreement on who they should be. This is what the world made safe for those know nothings and their ilk looks like.

Kimball Corson: I am a 75 year old solo sailor, by choice. However, I did take on a personable, but high maintenance female kitten, now a full grown cat, named KiKiPoo when she is sweet, or KatKatPo after she has just killed something like a bird or bat. [...]

Although I was a lawyer and practiced law with good success for thirty years, creating significant new law, I never really believed in the law, the politics of law or in the over reaching self-interest of most lawyers I met.
