Why the Great Libertarian Propaganda Effort or The Grand Scheme at Hand.

Greg Weiner far too narrowly misconceives the endeavors and agenda of the Koch Brothers and their conservative friends. Most know about the great propaganda effort of the Koch brothers, their wealthy friends and now others that began in about 1972 with misappropriation of methods outlined in the Powell letter to the National Chamber of Commerce on how to re-educate the public and get it to be generally more pro-business.
After Vietnam, many Americans were hostile toward Dow Chemical (agent orange) and other war industry companies and Powell (later Justice Powell) outlined a program of how to nationally counteract that public thinking. Koch & Friends adopted the methods explained in that letter to develop a system of economic propaganda to swing many Americans more to the right with Libertarian and Randian values and beliefs. Since then, they have spent more that $3 billion dollars on the effort and those who have been persuaded and joined them have spent more on top of that.
It has only been since that well funded effort began in the early 1970's that libertarian and Randian values became popular and widely held in the US. In the 1950 and 1960's only a tiny handful of Birchers held those values and most thought they were extreme. Republicans then were moderate centrists like Eisenhower and others. As to the nation, the propaganda has been very successful and has caused a hard sharp swing to the right for many, throughout the country. The central tenets are lower taxes, smaller government and no government interference in markets. The unaddressed question of this now-well-known story is why was it done.
No program of re-education or propaganda is ever 100% successful. Some will always think differently and will hold to their own views; indeed, that is so for a large percentage. Then, why the effort if it could not be more successful. The answer is full success is not necessary.
The oligarchy developed that big and expensive propaganda effort over forty plus years to divide the nation ideologically, to prevent political unity of the people at the voting polls. That is their real and greatest fear. They know a politically united America is their Achilles heel. They sought a huge ideological division to hopefully forever prevent that. That in turn is because we have the votes; they don't.
Their effort to divide (and conquer) the American electorate has been very largely successful. The divisive propaganda effort has been combined with widespread republican redistricting efforts, ALEC's legislative efforts, the Citizens United decision and the acquisition of substantial control over state legislatures -- all or most of which they funded -- all for a key purpose -- namely, a well thought out and planned constitutional convention to change the constitution by amendments to have it model libertarian and Randian conservative beliefs, beginning with a balanced budget amendment for starters. It is happening as we speak. Almost 30 states have already passed resolutions calling for a constitutional convention. Further, the process is being quietly geared up so the state legislatures-- not the people, by referendum or a state convention-- will be able to ratify the new constitutional amendments. That is an authorized constitutional alternative.
That is why the big money has been spent. These people are smart, meet in confidential sessions, plan ahead and put big money behind their efforts. They are patient and those of a centrist or liberal disposition are no match for them. It is all they can do to figure out what is going on. That is how disorganized and behind others are.
