Velas , Sao Jorge , Azores . A sleepy town but up and coming . The anchorage is quiet , but the Cory Shearwaters are never quiet . Just after dusk , they start their calling . It sounds like children laughing and playing . This goes on for several hours as they get settled in their roost along the cliffs . They do a little in the morning , but nothing like the evening . It is entertaining at first ......short lived though .
Reliant has the anchorage to herself close in to the very high, steep cliffs . The sun doesn't make it the boat until after 10:00 am . The bottom , no surprise , is a mixture of stones , boulders and small patches of sand . The anchor can be heard scraping among the stones all night .
The anchorage is not as quiet as it would appear because of birds and rocks . Still , a beautiful spot to suffer like that .
