Threshold is headed south, a long way south.

16 years Karyn and I have been sailing Threshold in circles around the North Atlantic and the Med. This year, after a couple of zigs and zags, it will be mostly a straight line south toward the Beagle Channel.

Arrived Alive, Piriapolis, Uruguay

21 October 2018
steve
We didn't exactly arrive because we set out toward Buenos Aires and pulled in 140 miles short at Piriapolis. That is why in the days of commercial sail they would never say they were going "to" a destination. It was always "toward" a destination. Superstitious lot those old timers. The good reasons to stop here on the north side of the Rio de Plata over came any reason to continue although we could have if we needed to. It is not an exaggeration to say that this was a once in a lifetime voyage. Once for my lifetime is a fairly certain statement. We, John, Mark, and I plus Karyn in absentia with her satellite tether, weather advice, and fully provisioned lockers sailed 4,000 miles in 28 days. We ate our way across the ocean and the lockers remain loaded. Some meals prepared in April remain untouched in the freezer. One of us actually worried about putting on weight but then he kept baking brownies so what did he expect. We had hot meals no matter the weather. The weather forecast was a constant topic of conversation and study. Through the Iridium (satellite communications system) and a Predict Wind app subscription we could down load a new forecast every 12 hours. This was remarkably accurate. So accurate was the forecast for the first three weeks we forgot to remember it was only a forecast. The last few days we had unexpected, un-forecast head winds. Still we made it to port, to dry land, to diet cokes, to real butter and a cold beer. We three had a great trip. Sometimes it was hot, stinky work. Sometimes it was wet and windy. Whatever. it was always done with the support of the each other. It was a huge challenge and it was fun. Thanks Mark. Thanks John.

The plan remains to get to Buenos Aires as soon as we can get our fuel issue straight. We will take a month off then resume the journey. I hope to get on line soon and put some photos here on the blog to go with the weak text. So check back in and look at the photo galleries next week.
