2020 Retired, The Virus, and great sailing

I retired in March 2020 and 6 days later I was on my yacht in Greece. Two days after that Greece imposed a lockdown and even a curfew over some holiday weekends from then until June 15th when we could again go sailing. Luckily there were three couples on their yachts in the yard where I was. One with [...]

The year started well on the boat. I got all the servicing done and lots of things fixed. I had and have a few issues with the windows in the saloon, will have to fix this year. by the fifth of May she was ready to sail across the Atlantic. I did a weeks sail to confirm before my family came out for a week or so. We did a long sail/motor from Preveza to Paxos to the south of Lefkada. Then Kalamos and back to Vonitsa. I few days later a couple arrived who wanted to join me on my first leg of my sail, Preveza to Sicily. We were lucky enough to find our selves in the middle of a large pod of dolphins and one whale feeding on a gigantic shoal of sardines or something off the toe of Italy. We arrived late having been watching Etna erupting from forty miles out. The next day I went up Etna, absolutely amazing. Continuous explosive fountaining, way better than any other volcano I have seen, but it was very cold, about 6C but 40mph winds so felt like -20C. I dropped the couple off at Cantana and headed to Syracuse. Spend a couple of days there visited the Neapolis Archaeological Park which for me being disabled is free. Then off to Malta, forecast was a broad reach all the way. but the wind died so motoring and chute up in alternate amounts, but slow going taking about 22 hours. Spent two days in Camper and Nicolson in Grand Harbour. site seeing before going to Mgarr on Gozo and then the beautiful Dwejra Bay. I left before sunset to sail back to Syracuse, had another day off to explore the old town. Then to Repriso again to fill up. next day sailed up the the Messina straight in a bit of a blow, tack tack tack all day, anchored up next day I couldn't even pick up my phone. I had a bad case of Golfers elbow. Well you cant really sail a boat singlehanded with out legs and only one arm working . So I phoned My friend Mark and we spent about an hour discussing the options.
I decided that it was silly to continue this expedition as what my are needed was rest for a couple of months at leased. so a tuned around and headed back to Preveza to take the boat out and head back to UK. 300+ NM in 42 hours. Wind blow at 40+ knots all the first night with waves from three directions. A bit Scary I can tell you. But all well in the end. My TA Col orthopaedic consultant said its old age. He's right, its January now and its still not right. Anyway Id planned to meet Lena in Pisa but instead we flew out together. Had a brilliant time, my legs saved us about 120€ a day in museums and galleries. We were told that I'm the first double amputee to climb both the Giotto's Bell Tower Florence and the Leaning tower Pisa. I ran up the latter.
Lena returned to UK and I via Rome two cancelled flights, a couple of train journey, and a ferry, ended back up in Greece. sailed the boat though to the end August but my arm was getting worse by the day so lifted her out and returned to Uk. I have now bought a high torque drill to wined the winches. which should make live easier. So that's 2022
