Pit stop

12 May 2011 | Tambor, Bahia de Ballena, Costa Rica
Peter
We were unsuccessful in our attempts to fuel up at Playa Herradurra marina so we ventured over to Tambor about 30 nm away and dropped the anchor. I was hoping this tiny 'pueblito' would have diesel but, alas, only gasoline to run the outboards of the fishing boats. So I grabbed a cab into Cubano while Jim provided security for the boat. I was able to get 15 gal. of diesel, which should be enough to get us to Nicaragua, and some provisions.

On the way back I lamented to the taxi driver that the supermarket did not have mangos. No problema! He pulls over on the side of the road next to a mango tree and I scourged the ground looking for ones with unbroken skins. One more 'mango stop' resulted in a total of four of these ripe, juicy fruits. Apparently the locals do not like to eat them! Why, I will never know. They are dime-a-dozen!

Tambor is a small fishing village with some gasoline and a bar/restaurant. Across the bay is a Barcelo resort (like the one we stayed at in Cancun for the Worlds). There are a ton of surf spots all over the Costa Rica shoreline. Right breaks. Left breaks. Big breaks. Givemea break! Wish I knew how to surf. It is one of the things I want to learn, but I don't think I will be dong any of it in the frigid WA waters!!

The weather has been tricky. Thunderstorms abound and it is a bit scary carrying a 62' lightning round in a place where you are the only place for miles around. Several times I have moved away from the metal and onto teak and fiberglass, just to make sure. Torrential downpours help us keep the aft water tank topped up. And the winds continue to be light (hence the need for diesel).

But other than that all is well. We will sail for San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua today. It should take us 36 hours, but we are so late leaving that it will actually be 2 days. I am curious about this spot because our information tells us there is a 5' swell in the anchorage. There are surfers in the anchorage!! Hope it isn't too rolly!!
