Rough night

10 June 2011 | 16N; 133W
Peter
Last night was a(nother) rough one. These seas are just so dang big! And when the stern washes out and goes sideways the whole boat gets tippy and it just isn't fun. I was nodding off on the cockpit seat this morning when, at 0507 I sat bolt upright! This rogue wave had pushed the stern of the boat around just at the same time that the boat had this massive speed coming off the face of a monster wave. For a split second I was scared spitless! It passed; I cursed. Then at 0600 it happened again.

This passage so far is not what was in the brochure. There has been little or no sun. The sea state is about what I expected, but it is rougher than I remembered. I am hoping it will get smoother the closer we get to Hilo. Speaking of that, we have been putting in 150 nm days under a reefed main and a full jib during the day a double-reefed jib at night. We keep catching the occasional bonito but there is little sign of life otherwise -- no birds, no freighters, no turtles, nothing.

And it is cold! Water temp is at 72 degrees. What is up with that? I've got everything I own on and that still isn't enough. (Personally, I think I look good in Ruth's pink tank top -- even if those cute, little, embroidered birds on the front have turned into raging vultures!!) I am wearing full foulies at night. Last I read, 16 deg. N was still in the t-r-o-p-i-c-s!!!! This sucks (in a word)!! :-)

And what about Hurricane Adrian that we left behind a few hundred miles? That girl has turned into a "full force", Class 4 hurricane. Class 4 is the strongest. Get this -- 120 mph winds!! I haven't even been in 60 mph winds! Yikes! I hope Nirvana is outta there along with everyone else. (And thank you, Lord, for carting our sorry butts west of there as well!)
