Meeting the "Totem" Family

24 October 2016 | Herrington Harbour South
Cool, Sunny
It was a real treat, and honor, to meet the "Sailing Totem" family this weekend. The Admiral and I attended their presentation at Herrington Harbour North on 23 OCT - It was a real joy to hear about their adventures, challenges and accomplishments! Was there inspiration there?...read on...

The Musings:

Reality: Behan, Jaimie and their kids are out there DOING it!...have been for 8 years...You GO guys!!!...When the Admiral asked Behan what/how they started their circumnavigation planning...she was surprised to discover that it didn't start out as "circumnavigation"...just a sabbatical to Mexico that grew into an entire adventure that has been around the world and starting again !

Things: Lots of references and discussion with others about things...What you need...what you don't...what you had and used...what you had and never touched - in the end, the Admiral and I realized that this adventurous family was able to separate things from living! What an awesome cognitive state to be in! When one begins to appreciate need versus want - its a new ball-game. Our take-away...Just GO - but be safe!...with what you have and make the choices that are right for you along the way. However - if you never get off the dock - you may never find that inner balance that makes life worth living!

Planning: I could "feel" the detailed planning skills, savvy and focus in both Behan and Jamie's recounts of their travels. These two not only work as a team with a "Lynn & Larry Pardey-Like" harmony - their children fit seamlessly into that team dynamic - truely a seasoned crew - IMHO! I was relieved to know that Jaime is as anal about route, weather and contingency planning as I am! I was also pleased to have opportunity to share in another couple's story as a comparison to our own future as a sailing team. The Admiral has "acquired" a love of living on the water and embraced my sailing dream with me! She has unique skills that will significantly enhance our adventures (already has!) much like the relationship that Behan and Jaime project...The Admiral is a born traveler, a student of human behavior and an adept communicator - she is the face and smile of SV Take Me There! Not to mention the many other amazing roles she plays in our life together! I am truly BLESSED!

Comparing: Please don't think that my musings attempt to compare the "Totem" crew with our own situation - each are quite unique. I point out that the experiences of others enrich our lives and inspire us to do "LIFE" in our own way! What an opportunity God gives us!...We are looking forward to it - together - every day!

Thanks Totem Family for the opportunity to "experience" you!
