The island of Culatra

Now that Otti and Rosie of Enya have moved to Ayamonte (Spanish border), I have relocated to the main anchorage at Culatra, an island in the Faro lagoon. The island has about 3,000 inhabitants, and no roads or cars. Goods are moved by a few tractors but there is no tarmac and only paved or concrete paths in town. Sandy tracks separate the settlements of Farol and Culatra and it has a very “island” feel. There are several restaurants and bars and a couple of small supermarkets. However, I took the ferry to Olhao on Tuesday to stock up in the town’s market and the Pingo Dolce supermarket nearby. At €4 for a round trip, it is a bit of a bargain. Buzz enjoys the beach, which is absolutely deserted in the mornings, while a small number of families and determined sun worshippers can be seen in the afternoon. The photo is of a rather elaborate beach residence....
