Dropping off Ewart

25 August 2019 | Plymouth
Martin Whitfield | W F3
Ewart had to get back to Bristol today so we took advantage of the Westerly wind and sailed back to Plymouth where trains were to be had. Took a berth in Queen's Anne Battery in Plymouth as easy for Ewart to get to the station and enabled me to get Allspars to measure up for the new rig which they will be installing at Baltic Wharf over the winter. Saved them a round trip to Totnes and probably paid for the MDL berth...

Stephen’s return

26 July 2019 | Brixham
Martin Whitfield | W F3
Stephen dared to come back after his awful two weeks on Knot Telling last year. This time the weather was much kinder and we popped around to Brixham in a gentle F3 westerly, sailing under genoa only. First time sailing for 10 years for Stephen's friend Paul so this was the perfect gentle start.

Dave’s 60 miles

18 June 2019 | Dartmouth town
Martin Whitfield
Up early to take Buzz for a walk on shore and then dinghy stashed away and off before 9 am for Dave's 60-miler back to Dartmouth. Had to engine all the way as they wind was slight until we were nearly in Dartmouth but found that the autopilot was working well. Pretty uneventful trip but the Navy's new aircraft carrier Queen Elizabeth was anchored outside Dartmouth when we arrived which was interesting. Stayed in Dartmouth town overnight rather than going straight up to Noss as then could fill up with diesel on the way in the morning. Had a pint in the Yacht Club. Distance 68 miles so mission accomplished.

Easter Sunday lunch

21 April 2019 | Dittisham
Martin Whitfield
Nick's partner Lisa joined Topaz Rival in the morning for a lunchtime jaunt up river to Dittisham for lunch. Launched the dinghy and across from the mooring buoys to the Anchorstone Cafe for a great fish lunch in the sunshine. Think summer has arrived early!

Full crew on board

20 April 2019 | Brixham to Noss
Martin Whitfield | E F3
Glynn and Chetna joined Nick and I for the trip back to Noss on a lovely sunny day. We had the sails up for a bit and then had to motor to Dartmouth. But as we started to see the river entrance the wind picked up and we had a great sail for a while moving along at 6 knots in smooth water. Fabulous. Glyn and Chetna went back to Brixham to get their car and we tended to our sunburn!

Topaz on her original berth: She has been here for 20 years or more
The quarter berth: No to sure whether to believe this, but was told this was the original plastic cover!
Instrument panel: The depth and autopilot work, not so sure about the GPS!
Bukh 36: I’m told that Bukh paint is first class. Well this engine is 29-years-old...
Survey lift shows keel shape: Topaz is the scheel keel version 1.5m draft
Rudder and skeg: As Tom Cunliffe says “a wholesome compromise between precise steering at sea, comfort, and athletic steering in harbour”. We’ll see about the latter...
Dirt and mould: An image of neglect
Deck: Nothing that a good clean can’t solve
Crazy portlights: There are 10 of these...
