Weather bound in Weymouth

25 July 2020 | Weymouth
Martin Whitfield | F5 W rain
Raining here in Weymouth and things not really likely to improve enough to get to Dartmouth until Tuesday. Clare and I had early start (5am) in Lymington to get through the Needles with the tide. Had to motor to St Alban’s Head but then good sailing in the afternoon sunshine to Weymouth, passing all the anchored cruise ships in the bay.

Great sailing

Left Chichester Harbour against the tide but then had the flow with us all the way to Lymington! Big smiles as Topaz Rival was flying along at seven knots in 13 knots of wind. The breeze got flaky around Southampton Water but then picked up again so we sailed to within a half a mile of the Lymington channel. It’s been great to be sailing with Dawn again and we had a lovely few days out on the water and got lots of little jobs done at the same time. Dawn left after fish and chips in Lymington and Clare is due tomorrow for the trip down to Dartmouth. PS Topaz Rival has a name!

Anchor at Itchenor

21 July 2020 | Itchenor
Martin Whitfield | Sunny
Perfect weather for our first overnight anchor with Topaz Rival at Itchenor. Calm and sunny with complete silence on the riverbank apart from the bird calls. Arrived just before low tide so waited for it to turn before heading to the Itchenor dinghy pontoon for dog walking. A quick stop at the Ship on the way back and a peaceful night’s sleep.

Stocking up at Port Solent

We spent the forecast wet day at Port Solent where we stocked up on groceries and eventually managed to get the battens back on the mainsail. We also found a great walking spot for the dogs very close by. Only real problem was the long walk to the huge supermarket
for even a pint of milk - you would think that Port Solent would support a little shop.

Lunch with Victoria

18 July 2020 | Osborne Bay

Having left Swanwick with a new traveller for the boom outhaul We popped over to Osborne Bay, Queen Victoria's favourite, to test the anchor for lunch. All went well in a very busy anchorage and another piece of equipment passed its initial test. With not very nice weather forecast for Sunday Dawn and I decided to opt for the comfort of Port Solent for a couple of nights. Perfect sailing weather meant we were touching 7.5 knots on the way over with full sail and downwind with the genoa on the leg to Port Solent.

Back to Lymington

Great few days sailing from Dartmouth to Lymington via Brixham, Weymouth and Swanage. Here to meet Sanders Sails tomorrow for the measuring of a new sprayhood. Sailed with Chris on this trip and the weather was mostly sunny but occasionally cold when the wind got up at the end of the day. Finally managed to get the sails back on with Dawn working the mainsail at Totnes and Chris the Genoa in Dartmouth. The journey to Brixham was genoa only as dead downwind but from there to Swanage was full sail with up to seven knots through the water. Lovely to be in Weymouth again and Swanage Sailing Club moorings are excellent although one day we must actually venture into the club.
