Stewart Island, New Zealand

08 November 2022

With most borders closed due to Covid I decided to head south to Stewart Island and Fiordland for the summer of 2021/22. Consequently, I departed Wellington on 8 Nov 2021 for an overnight sail to Lyttelton to meet up with Ian Mossman off Sinead as we'd arranged to cruise in company. From Lyttelton, as the weather allowed we progressively moved south stopping off in Port Levy, Akaroa and Oamaru before finally arriving at Stewart Island on 2 Dec 21.

December was to be quite a breezy month on Stewart Island but as the weather allowed we explored some of the many anchorages in Patterson Inlet until eventually Christmas Day arrived. The day was to be a rare day of light winds and brilliant sunshine so we rafted the boats together for breakfast before taking a walk ashore to build up an appetite and thirst for dinner which was taken on Ian's boat. Many toasts were made to our fortune as the day progressed which resulted in the cancellation of Boxing Day.

New Year's Eve arrived with a gale warning in force from the south west so I moved round to Little Glory Bay for a restful night leaving Ian to enjoy his sleepless night in the exposed anchorage of Thule Bay.

During January the weather steadily improved so we headed south to Port Pegasus, stopping off at Lords River for a few nights. Port Pegasus is pretty remote so there were few boats here but I did bump into the German yacht SuAn whom I'd last seen in Japan on a previous trip. Another sunny clear day allowed us to climb Bald Cone and take in the views over the south of the island in excellent visibility. We had one gale for which we rafted together in Evening Cove with lines ashore to remain secure in our anchorage.

With a few more days available before the weather was due to deteriorate we headed through to the North Arm before departing Port Pegasus prior to the change. We made a quick stop in Port Adventure and then finally back to Patterson Inlet to await John and Jackie on their yacht Maristella.

Maristella arrived in mid February and after a quick look around Patterson Inlet a suitable weather window appeared for us to make the trip through Foveaux Strait to Fiordland. It was time to face the ferocious sand flies of Fiordland.

Since my last visit by yacht to Stewart Island when less than a handful of cruising vessels visited the numbers have now increased exponentially. Whilst most boats and crews seemed prepared, a significant number weren't prepared for these latitudes. Poor anchoring skills and/or a lack of suitable anchoring equipment saw some boats constantly dragging whenever there was a bit of a blow.
