On our way Westward
23 June 2016
It is now June 23rd. We left Port Colburne, Ont bright and early Tuesday morning. We were going to leave on Monday, but the weather channel was calling for Thunderstorms. Well, they ended up coming in late Monday night, however, it was very windy so we are glad we waited. Tuesday, when we left it was a great day. We decided to travel to Erie, PA instead of Dunkirk. We stopped over at Presque Isle State Park Marina and fueled up, then went over to Bay Harbor Yacht Club. It was a very nice marina. We forgot to check in with U.S. Customs a Presqe Isle Marina, so we decided to go over to Perry Harbor. If you have not checked in to the U.S. lately, it is very interesting. They now use videophones.
Yesterday, Wednesday, we went into Erie. We stopped by the Maritime Museum, but the Tall Ship Niagara, was not in. So we wandered around in town then went down Millionaires Row. We ended up at the Hagen Historical house. It was built in the 1800’s and was absolutely stunning. We had no idea that Tiffany, the glass company also did wood carving. All of the wood work in the house was done by Tiffany’s. There are panels on the ceiling of the parlor that looks to be painted wood, but each piece is a canvan. Each room in the house has a differently styled fireplace. We had a self guided tour. We Could have stayed in the house for hours. As it was, it was a good 1 ½ hours. The house was 3 floors, the top floor being the ball room. Above the room on one side was a balcony, which held an organ. The house only had two owners. The original owner, who after his death, his wife sold the property. The owners then kept the house until 1941, when they sold it to the Erie School District. The school district then used it for Administrative Offices until it 2000, when it was sold to the Historical Society. All of the wood work and many of the furnishings in the home were original.
We left this morning from Erie headed for someplace West. We were originally headed for Geneva State Park, but the wind built and the waves were coming in on our starboard quarter, which made for an uncomfortable ride as the waves built, so we decided to stop into Ashtabula. We are now at the Ashtabula Yacht Club, which is a very nice facility. They do have reciprocity, but the ‘fleet captain’ who checked us in, couldn’t find GLCC ( Great Lakes Cruising Club) in their list of reciprocal clubs. I found a booklet, that shows that GLCC has reciprocity, but it may be a different sanction body. We will check. Tomorrow morning, we will leave early and head for Cleveland, where we will visit The Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame.
