Koombana Bay Twilight Sail

Wednesday found me in Bunbury for work, so I called into the Koombana Bay Sailing Club to see if anyone I knew was there. Luckily for me, Terry was just about to go out on Wayward, his 32' Catalina (Ken had already left on his trimaran). Despite coming a relaxed last, it was a lot of fun and definitely [...]

New speed record?

Today the GPS decides to work. It had to - I had just ordered a new antenna from the US. I have also installed a wind indicator on the top of the mast, probably something I wouldn't need if I had hair.

Shark Bay trip - day 8

On our last day we made an early start north to have a final crack at reaching Big Lagoon. The wind was a beautiful 10 kn from the south-west giving us a direct and leisurely sail to our destination. Shark Bay trip - days 4-7

The next 3 to 4 days excelled themselves in a steady stream of mild sunny days with the odd afternoon seabreeze. Apart from a few minor journeys out to deeper water for fishing (lots of mackerel) we did not do much sailing at all. Still it is very hard to complain and we visited the local sights and competed with each other to see who could do the most crosswords.

Shark Bay trip - morning day 1

Windy
At six o'clock one fine sunny Friday morning, full of a sense of adventure and holiday cheer etc we set forth with Triffic in tow, northwards and over the horizon to Shark Bay.

Shark Bay represents something of a romantic mystery, at least to West Australians. We boast that our western coast was discovered by white man long before Captain Cook made his famous landfall at Botany Bay. But where our English forebears decided it was worth coming back and making something of Terra Australis, Dirk Hartog's Dutch expeditionists reached an entirely different conclusion. Indeed, if it wasn't for Britain's fear of Napoleon's expansionist tendancies, the outpost that is Western Australia might have been very French - sacre bleu!

The very name 'Shark Bay' also does little to foster a welcoming image. Instead of the quiet bays, secluded lagoons and a fantastically varied marine life that this World Heritage area boasts, the name reminds us of one of our most primal fears.

However, for those few who have been there before and can see beyond the terrors of the deep, or for those who seek out one of Western Australias more accessible wilderness areas, Shark Bay is not without its beauty.

And of course, not being too displeasing to the eye ourselves, we were going to add to it...
