Montserrat was our first port of call. It is a British dependency with a female governor. What a surprise she must have had on arrival. Being posted to an active volcano with a population of 5000 can't be the most sort-after diplomatic posting in the British Foreign Service. The volcano exploded in 1995 and has continued to do so periodically, and as a result everything they have built since is temporary. Two thirds of the island is an exclusion zone, so we toured the remaining third in a nice air conditioned van with a driver we called Joe Tautology - made a one hour tour into four that way. The visit to the Montserrat Volcano Observatory was very interesting and the movie showed the stunning force of the explosions and the bravery of the volcanologists. The best view of the volcano and its destruction, however, was when we sailed the length of the island on our way to Guadeloupe, as the photo shows.
