Northbound

It was chilly on Monday. We were going to head into Titusville and do a bit of provisioning, but decided it could wait a day and just hung about the boat discussing where we should go next. With a month long layover starting the last week of February we needed to decide where we wanted to be for that [...]

Endeavour Launch

We arrived in Titusville as planned on Thursday and anchored out in front of the Titusville Municipal Marina. We arrived early enough to hop in the dinghy and go in and check out the neighbourhood before heading back and cooking supper.

What a difference a day makes

Up early and on the move again by 7 AM this morning, we aim to put in another longish day, covering the remaining 46 miles to Titusville as they are calling for rain tomorrow...no sense standing out in the cockpit in the rain if you don't have to.

On the move again

We are on the move again. We left St Augustine this morning at first light on our way to Titusville to see the Endeavour launch - scheduled for 4:39 AM Sunday morning. It was supposed to be a fairly warm sunny day with a high around 72 F but for the most part is was cloudy and breezy...so we were still [...]

Provisioning and Stowing

We've spent the week provisioning and stowing in preparation for moving on from St. Augustine. As you can imagine, after being in one place for a month some of the lockers seem to have emptied themselves...at least partly. The winter clothes are now stowed where the summer clothes used to be and the [...]

Erie Canal & the Hudson River

28 October 2009 | New York State
Wow, a week has gone by since the last update. Time flies!

Last Wednesday (Oct 21st) we got as far as Amsterdam, NY and tie-off just above Lock 11 with 15 amp service (which means heat - all night).

Thursday we made it to Vischer's Ferry and tied off just above Lock 7...and happily discovered there was 15 amp service on the lamppost (thanks to the Lock Master for pointing it out. We weren't expecting it)

Friday was an easy day. After clearing Lock 7 we carried on and reached Guard Gate 2 at about 9:30 AM and started the Waterford "Flight of Five" (5 locks that must be cleared without stopping). Each of the last 5 locks is a 33-34 foot lift (or in our case - drop). In the last lock (Lock 2) the rope Doug was using to hold the boat came up a bit short. You couldn't tell from the top, but about 12 feet down it ran out (looked like it had been caught in a prop as it was a bit shredded) so we had to scramble a bit and move the boat forward so we could both hang off the cable/ladder that I had been using at the bow. Once out of the lock we tied off on the wall just past the Waterford Welcome Centre....home of showers, free Wi-Fi, nearby Laundromat, gas and grocery stores...not to mention the cheap $1.75 breakfasts at Dan & Paul's. We spent the weekend...

Saturday was rainy but Mom & Dad drove down to meet us and brought the drier, warmer weather with them. We had a great visit and a superb meal at a restaurant in Troy. Sunday started with another huge breakfast at Don & Paul's, provisioning and general maintenance.

Monday we were off again...we headed out, hung a right at the Hudson River and cleared the last lock. From there it was a short trip to Castleton where we put the mast back up (not tuned, no sails yet and still need to hook up the VHF and lights) and then took a mooring ball for the night.

Tuesday was cold and drizzly but we rode the current most of the day (which means we were flying along at 6.5 knots) and made it to an anchorage just past the turn off to Kingston, NY. By the time we had the anchor down and everything set it was getting dark and before we had a chance to hang the anchor light a huge barge was hitting us with search lights...trying to figure out what we were as they made a wide sweeping turn down the channel towards Kingston. The barge traffic carried on for a while after that but all was quiet by about 8:00 PM and stayed that way until about 6:30 AM. It rained all night

Today (Wednesday) it was raining, but a bit warmer. We made it to an anchorage at the north end of Haverstraw Bay. The tidal currents weren't working with us this morning but finally at around 1:00 we caught the current moving in the right direction and started to make 6+ knots.

Tomorrow we head for New York harbour...possibly an anchorage at Liberty State Park.
