Northbound

It was chilly on Monday. We were going to head into Titusville and do a bit of provisioning, but decided it could wait a day and just hung about the boat discussing where we should go next. With a month long layover starting the last week of February we needed to decide where we wanted to be for that [...]

Endeavour Launch

We arrived in Titusville as planned on Thursday and anchored out in front of the Titusville Municipal Marina. We arrived early enough to hop in the dinghy and go in and check out the neighbourhood before heading back and cooking supper.

What a difference a day makes

Up early and on the move again by 7 AM this morning, we aim to put in another longish day, covering the remaining 46 miles to Titusville as they are calling for rain tomorrow...no sense standing out in the cockpit in the rain if you don't have to.

On the move again

We are on the move again. We left St Augustine this morning at first light on our way to Titusville to see the Endeavour launch - scheduled for 4:39 AM Sunday morning. It was supposed to be a fairly warm sunny day with a high around 72 F but for the most part is was cloudy and breezy...so we were still [...]

Provisioning and Stowing

We've spent the week provisioning and stowing in preparation for moving on from St. Augustine. As you can imagine, after being in one place for a month some of the lockers seem to have emptied themselves...at least partly. The winter clothes are now stowed where the summer clothes used to be and the [...]

Freezing our bollards off in South Carolina

12 December 2009 | South Carolina
We are making good progress but we'd be much happier if we saw the sun a bit more often and maybe a bit of warmth...

After leaving Belhaven on Sat Nov 28th we had our first dolphin spotting when a couple of dolphins breached just next to the boat. By Tuesday we were anchored in Wrightsville Beach and spent the following day on "anchor watch" as we sat out another blast of gale force winds. Happily, Thursday was warm and sunny so we spent some time in town strolling around and watching the surfers on the beach on the ocean side of town. This is the first spot we've seen palm trees.

A couple of more days of travel (and miserably cold weather) put us in Charleston by Tuesday night (Dec 8th) - just ahead of yet another storm all day Wednesday. Anchored just across the channel from a monster yacht (we estimated to be at least 150 feet) we decided $2 million in liability wasn't nearly enough if we were to drag and scratch that pretty boat (Charleston harbour is not a 'nice' place to anchor - too many boats in deep water trying to put out enough scope to prevent dragging in mediocre holding and strong currents with little or no protection from wind, wakes or chop) but thanks to the skill of our crew we held our ground just fine. Thursday we toured Charleston (on the only moderately warm day expected for about another week) which is a lovely city full of beautiful homes.

We left Charleston yesterday morning in near freezing temperatures. We anchored for the night about halfway between Charleston and Beaufort, SC (pronounced "byoofort' even though it is spelled the same as the Beaufort in NC) and just as we were finishing securing everything for the night we heard a nasty little tinkling sound outside...sleet. I baked banana bread and a casserole for dinner just to help keep the boat warm (even Doug is starting to grumble about the cold...and he's never cold)

We've anchored for the night just a couple of miles north of Beaufort. It's about 8 degrees and raining and we're expecting 1-2 inches of rain overnight (sounds like baked potatoes are in order). We'll keep pushing south until we get warm. I sure hope it's soon.
