Northbound

It was chilly on Monday. We were going to head into Titusville and do a bit of provisioning, but decided it could wait a day and just hung about the boat discussing where we should go next. With a month long layover starting the last week of February we needed to decide where we wanted to be for that [...]

Endeavour Launch

We arrived in Titusville as planned on Thursday and anchored out in front of the Titusville Municipal Marina. We arrived early enough to hop in the dinghy and go in and check out the neighbourhood before heading back and cooking supper.

What a difference a day makes

Up early and on the move again by 7 AM this morning, we aim to put in another longish day, covering the remaining 46 miles to Titusville as they are calling for rain tomorrow...no sense standing out in the cockpit in the rain if you don't have to.

On the move again

We are on the move again. We left St Augustine this morning at first light on our way to Titusville to see the Endeavour launch - scheduled for 4:39 AM Sunday morning. It was supposed to be a fairly warm sunny day with a high around 72 F but for the most part is was cloudy and breezy...so we were still [...]

Provisioning and Stowing

We've spent the week provisioning and stowing in preparation for moving on from St. Augustine. As you can imagine, after being in one place for a month some of the lockers seem to have emptied themselves...at least partly. The winter clothes are now stowed where the summer clothes used to be and the [...]

Ringing in the New Year in St Augustine

10 January 2010 | St Augustine, Florida
We were approaching St Augustine and figured we'd make the 2:00 pm bridge opening (Bridge of Lyons) with time to spare...until I noticed the a huge shoal in the harbour that prevented us from making a bee-line for the bridge. Fortunately there were a few other boats waiting to get through so we had just enough time to jump on the end of the line and make it through.

We'd decided a marina would be more convenient while my parents were visiting and the marina we were heading for was just on the other side of the bridge. Before we had a chance to get the boat tied off my parents arrived and were excitedly telling us they'd seen us coming through the bridge.

We spent the next few days touring St Augustine, checking out the "fountain of youth", sampling many of the fine restaurants and catching up on news from home. The temperatures during the daytime were pleasant enough but at night the temperatures were dropping down close to freezing...enough that we were glad to have electricity for the heater...the anchorage looked mighty cold.

New Year's Day, Mom and Dad packed up and started the trip north again (with a planned side trip to Georgia). We had the dock...and therefore the electricity to run the heater until Monday so we hoisted the antennae up the mast and scanned for channels to see if we'd missed anything exciting on TV

We kept our eye on the weather forecasts and didn't see any breaks in the record breaking freezing temperatures. Come Monday the long range forecasts were still calling for below freezing temperatures at night...so for less than the price of another week we took the dock for a month as we figured if we were going to freeze to death in Florida it might as well be in St Augustine. This has turned out to be an excellent decision as the freezing nights have just kept on coming. They were even forecasting a chance of snow flurries for Friday that - thankfully - didn't materialize, but it was certainly cold enough.

So for now we are just going to hang about, relax and try to keep warm until the weather starts to cooperate...and maybe with a bit of luck I'll even manage to catch dinner one of these days...
