Northbound

It was chilly on Monday. We were going to head into Titusville and do a bit of provisioning, but decided it could wait a day and just hung about the boat discussing where we should go next. With a month long layover starting the last week of February we needed to decide where we wanted to be for that [...]

Endeavour Launch

We arrived in Titusville as planned on Thursday and anchored out in front of the Titusville Municipal Marina. We arrived early enough to hop in the dinghy and go in and check out the neighbourhood before heading back and cooking supper.

What a difference a day makes

Up early and on the move again by 7 AM this morning, we aim to put in another longish day, covering the remaining 46 miles to Titusville as they are calling for rain tomorrow...no sense standing out in the cockpit in the rain if you don't have to.

On the move again

We are on the move again. We left St Augustine this morning at first light on our way to Titusville to see the Endeavour launch - scheduled for 4:39 AM Sunday morning. It was supposed to be a fairly warm sunny day with a high around 72 F but for the most part is was cloudy and breezy...so we were still [...]

Provisioning and Stowing

We've spent the week provisioning and stowing in preparation for moving on from St. Augustine. As you can imagine, after being in one place for a month some of the lockers seem to have emptied themselves...at least partly. The winter clothes are now stowed where the summer clothes used to be and the [...]

Super Cells and Funnel Clouds

25 January 2010 | St Augustine, Florida
We survived some "super cell" thunderstorms today...with all of our parts intact. The weather did spawn a few tornados in the area that did actually touch down and cause considerable damage before heading out to sea.

The TV stations were taking the weather situation pretty seriously as they pre-empted the daytime soaps for continuous weather coverage. I kept one eye on the TV coverage and the other on the NOAA radar images on the internet to see which direction the storm was moving. There was no doubt we would be hit by severe thunderstorms at the very least...it was the tornados I was concerned about.

When they advised viewers in the county just to the west of us to take immediate cover I started to pack a dry bag with essentials...passports, wallets, electronics, flashlights, batteries, radio, etc. Doug seemed to find my reaction to the warnings with some amusement. He would have been content to just sit in the boat and watch the coverage on TV (although he did go outside and check the lines and secure the dinghy), but having a healthy respect (and fascination) for tornados I insisted we take our prized possessions and head for cover. It was on the way up the dock that we spotted the funnel cloud. I stopped to take a picture.

The concentration of super cells passed to the north of us - about 10 minutes later - and gave us quite a show. We watched from under the high winds, lightning and rain moving sideways from under a cement passage way. And then it was gone...

Friday morning was wonderfully warm and sunny. After lunch we rode over to Winn Dixie in shorts and t-shirts. Within the 30 minutes we were in the store the weather did a 180. When we came out of the store it was cloudy, chilly and foggy.

Friday evening we rode over to the Friday night social at the St. Augustine Yacht Club...drinks and yummy hors d'oeuvres.

Not really anything noteworthy to report other than that...unless you consider Sunday football and laundry to be noteworthy.
