Travelling at 1.9 knots
20 June 2013 | STRAITS OF MESSINA
Una
We needed mechanical help for this and it wasn’t available on the island of Vulcano. Nor did we want to waste any more time here, so as there was no wind to fill the sails the good old outboard and the dinghy came to the rescue! We tied the dinghy alongside, midship and crept along at 1.9 knots. At least we were moving!
We motored on like this through the night and as dawn broke we reached Sicily and entered The Straits of Messina.
It was still very calm and we had the good luck to see a traditional sword fishing boat in action. Their bowsprit is twice as long as the boat and there were two and sometimes three men up at the top of the high mast to spot the sword fish as they bask on the surface of the water.
