I have owned, driven and worked on Alfa Romeos for 38 years. Every time I go into an auto parts store and ask for a part, they ask, "What make and model?" When I reply, "Alfa Romeo," I am always greeted with an eye roll and often a groan. I'm so sick of that!
Same response when I tell people the draft of Uproar is eight feet. People are incredulous. One guy told me immediately that I can get Mars to cast me a shallower keel and it won't be that hard to switch out. I informed him I bought the boat knowing the draft is deep and I love the way Uproar sails.
In St Michaels a nearby boat asked about our draft and the guy almost fell off his boat when I told him "eight feet." He kept exclaiming and questioning, "EIGHT FEET?!" Lisa finally told him we were a racing boat which he could accept. We ended up moving to a different anchorage and swung into about 6 feet at night. Nothing Glyn, Laura, Lisa and I couldn't fix with a lot of kedging and sweating!
We have spent the past 4 days in the ICW (Icy W would more accurately describe the weather). I have called into several marinas to inquire about depth so I could get fuel or possibly take a dock for the night. One marina operator said, "What are you doing with that boat in the ICW?" Another said, "No way can you get in here. I'm curious, what kind of boat is that?"
We have had a delightful time in the ICW from Newport to Beaufort, NC. Not going any further because it does get shallow further south. Instead we are heading to the Bahamas. Everyone tells us we won't make it in the Bahamas with "EIGHT FEET." I think from now on I will state our draft as 2.3 meters.
